Living cells and microorganisms can sense their surroundings, make decisions, and respond to changing conditions to survive.
In this lecture, the speaker explores how cells make these “decisions” and how their past experiences can influence their present behaviour.
The research focuses on Salmonella bacteria and flagella, the tiny rotating structures that help them swim. It investigates how food availability influences the number of flagella bacteria build and pass on when they divide.
By combining experiments with mathematical models, the study examines how traces of past environmental conditions, stored through cellular processes, shape bacterial responses. This work offers insights into how bacteria adapt to changing environments and how quickly flagella numbers can evolve in response to their surroundings.
Arnab Barua is a theorist, working as an Assistant Professor at Dhirubhai Ambani University, Gandhinagar. His research area belongs at the intersection of Mathematical Biology, learning and decision making theory. He seeks to understand how biological organisms gather information, make decisions, and adapt to their surroundings from both Principlist and Holistic approach. He completed his PhD in Mathematical Biology at TU Dresden and his MSc in Physics at IIT Bombay. His broader research area explores the fundamental principles of learning and decision-making at the intersection of living and artificial systems.
