About the lecture

This conversation explores India’s nuclear journey, the fascinating lesser-known applications of atomic science, and the ambition to make nuclear technology a much larger force in national development. Most importantly, it asks whether the future of nuclear science is not something to fear, but something we need to understand.

Most people hear the word “nuclear” and immediately imagine mushroom clouds, Geiger counters, and scientists with alarming hairstyles. This chat attempts a rehabilitation of the atom.

The same nuclear science that once produced the Hiroshima bomb today quietly helps save millions of lives through cancer therapy, sterilisation of medical products, food preservation, and agricultural innovation. In one of history’s great scientific ironies, cobalt-60, a cousin of the bomb, now spends much of its time politely attacking cancer cells in hospitals instead of civilizations.

About the speaker

Dr. A.P. Jayaraman is a former senior nuclear scientist at the Baba Atomic Research Centre, a science communicator, and the President of the STEAM Academy. He has spent decades translating complex scientific ideas into compelling public conversations, with a special focus on story-based science education and science popularization. His work has helped bring science closer to children, educators, and broader audiences across India.
