How do people choose? A simple question with complex answers depending on the perspective. In this talk, we will introduce behavioural economics (the intersection of economics and psychology) to understand how humans make decisions. Narrow approaches in economics typically make a host of assumptions about how people choose, but psychology has several insights on what matters. The talk will cover how we often take mental shortcuts (heuristics), are prone to various influences while choosing, and how we choose when we lack the time, information, or ability to make the "right" choice. Finally, we will talk about how behavioural economics has influenced government policy, algorithms, and using these insights for ourselves.
