What happens when gravity becomes so powerful that not even light can escape? This lecture takes us into the strange world of black holes—from event horizons and the bending of light to the theoretical possibilities of white holes and wormholes. We will explore how these ideas lead to mind-bending questions about time travel, and how Hawking radiation gives rise to one of physics’ deepest puzzles: the information loss paradox. But black holes pose an even bigger challenge: the numerous supermassive black holes observed in the universe raise fundamental questions about how they could have formed, challenging our existing theories.
Prof. Patrick Das Gupta is a theoretical physicist and astrophysicist whose work spans general relativity, black holes, gravitational waves and high-energy astrophysics. He spent over three decades at the University of Delhi, where he was Professor of Physics & Astrophysics. He is currently an Honorary Senior Professor at the Indian Centre for Space Physics, Kolkata. His research explores some of the most fundamental questions surrounding gravity, spacetime and the extreme objects of our universe. He has published extensively on black holes and related astrophysical phenomena, and continues to engage with questions at the frontiers of modern physics.
